Acai Nutrition

September 25th, 2009

The acai berry, indiginous to South America, as been touted as a “Superfruit” because of the claim that it is full of antioxidants. Of course, Acai Burn is the premier product of all the products out there with regard to its antioxidant qualities and ability to cauterize the pounds and inches from a person while making him or her feel less bloated and more rejuvenated.

The added green tea extract makes it work just that much better. Not all Acai products though work as equally well. Some almost seem defunct next to the product previewed here. Therefore you have to use discernment. One  so-called acai product contained what was equal to 2 cups of coffee in its pill. It just goes to show that not all acai products really represent the acai berry but actually contain more of the coffee bean than the berry extract.

Regardless, fortunately some of the acai supplements do what they claim such as Acai Burn. A number of the other acai supplements are simply making false claims as to their true identity such as the so-called acai supplement with the additional caffeine. Be wary. Look at the labels. Make sure you’re getting the genuine product and not some sort of facsimilie.

Exercising

September 22nd, 2009

If you want to maintain your energy while working out, probably the best way to do so is by creating your own trail mix or what I like to refer as “exercise mix”. That way you avoid the extra sugar and salt that is usually included in commercial brands.

Combine the basic ingredients such as peanuts and raisins or cranberries together with cereal. Make sure the ingredients are unsweetened. Other good ingredients include almonds or sesame seeds. Usually about 1/4 dry cup of each of the nuts and fruits are about right with about 1/2 cup of the cereal.

Mix the ingredients in a plastic bag. You’ll be getting plenty of fiber, carbs and fiber along with Vitamin C and the associated antioxidants of that vitamin to give you the energy you need during your workout. Total calories are about 500.

Wash everything down with bottled water, or skim milk if you’re doing something intense like weightlifting  or high-impact aerobics.

This kind of snack can also be a good energy booster while, biking, hiking or running. Keep it in your gym bag when you go to the gym. Reward yourself for your efforts at staying lean and healthy.

Or keep a baggie of healthy fruits such as grapes or sliced apples to offer energy for workouts that aren’t as intense. Whatever way you choose to go, you’ll be well-rewarded for your healthy indulgence.

The Food Pyramid & Weight Loss

September 19th, 2009

To stay healthy and thin, a pyramid type of diet scheme works well when it comes to basic nutrition. For example, at the bottom of the pyramid are the ever-abundant health-giving properties of fruits and vegetables. On the next tier of the pyramid are the grains. The  tier above that is comprised of  seafood and poultry. Still higher up the pyramid, one finds the dairy selections. And at the top are beans, legumes and nuts.

Therefore, a nutritious diet places emphasis on vegetables and fruits or a serving of up to 9 per day for an active individual. Follow that grouping with whole grains with a serving of up to 4 per day. Dairy qualifies for 2 servings maximum daily while seafood and poultry should at least see your plate once a day. It’s the same with regards to servings for the beans, nuts and legumes. One serving of this grouping should be sufficient.

Give this pyramid some thought when you’re eating to stay thin as well as keeping an eye on your cholesterol count. It can serve a useful purpose for any dieter who wants to stay healthy and active. This type of adherence with regards to diet can reap health benefits as well as assist in maintaining your weight for many years to come.

Liquid Calories

September 16th, 2009

A lot of our weight problems stem, I believe, from the calories we consume in some beverages. Such calories are insidious, piling the pounds on us as we wonder why we never are successful at losing weight.

In addition, I read that women who drink only one cola per day had lower bone desity than those ladies who decided to stick to water for their beverage of choice. So there you have it - cola beverages not only cause us to gain weight, they can also make our bones brittle as well.

Now I shudder at the prospect of drinking a Cappucino from Starbucks or enjoying the nice refreshing taste of a diet pop. What am I going to be burdened with weight-wise if I happen to enjoy a pleasing glass of orange juice in the morning? Yes, water seems to be my safest bet.

Needless to say, we can most assuredly gain weight from the beverages we consume. Who would think a visit to Starbucks would reap such disastrous results when it comes to our overall calorie consumption for the day? Some cappacinos are a full 600 plus calories.

You’re definitely walking into some dangerous territory merely by visiting your local Starbucks each morning!

Apparently, it’s not just the foods we eat that can cause us to pack on the pounds. What we drink can be responsible as well.

Does Laughing Burn Calories?

June 9th, 2009

You always hear that laughter is the best medicine.  I am a believer.  What is it that makes us laugh?  And why is it that there can be something that is not even remotely funny but we start laughing and “the nothing” will make us laugh so incredibly hard we start to cry and our stomach hurts so bad you can hardly breathe?  Just as you feel you are able to regain control of your hysteria, someone will look at you or you see another ridiculously un- funny thing and it kicks off the laughing frenzy once again.

We were having a family BBQ and clean up day at my moms.  It is one of those grand occasions where all the kids and grandkids get together and pull weeds, fix fences, mow the lawn and whatever repairs need to be done. The grandkids eventually start playing in the water and that keeps going until it is time to eat.

My oldest daughter did nothing but give me a funny look while wearing her “Willy Wonka” type sunglasses and I lost it.  The laughing frenzy had begun.  Then she started laughing at me because I was being so ridiculous, which only fed my laughing problem.  The hysterics continued on a varying degree for about the next 10 minutes.  Finally I had to ask her to just walk away.  It was a great time and my stomach felt like I had just done a hundred sit ups – hurray for me and the insatiable laughing.

Water & Weight Loss

June 3rd, 2009

Oh how I love the wonderful little added benefits of being a woman.  I am specifically referring to the wonderment of water retention.  I would love to figure out a formula that would regulate my body’s level of water so that I might be able to avoid the discomfort of puffiness.  My “puffiness” is typically in my eyes and my hands.  I know, to much information right?  I just can’t seem to find a good balance of water/sodium consumption.  I am not your typical salt lover, I hardly ever add salt to the foods I eat.  So why is it that my rings will fit fine one moment and the next I need to saw the thing off to remove it from my finger.

I made a couple of discoveries.  First, diet soda may have eliminated all of the sugars and carbohydrates but because of the carbonation and the sodium content your body reacts by retaining water and leaves you that wonderful “puffy/bloated” feeling.  Second, imagine my surprise when I discovered that in addition to cutting out the diet soda I needed to increase my water consumption to help get rid of the water my body has been retaining.  That sounded completely wrong.  Drink more water to rid my body of water.   And the last one was that when you are hiking or being overly active you can guzzle a gallon of water and if you do not eat something with a little bit of salt in it the water will go right through you and you can become dehydrated.
